Listening for November
Have a listen to this wonderfully groovy rendition of Bach's Gavotte en Rondeau, played by world-renowned, Grammy award winning artist Paul O'Dette. I had the great fortune to study with Paul for a few years while I was in the USA. One of the main things I got from lessons with him was the attention to detail. Paul encourages that you play each voice separately, finding its character, shape, articulation, etc. and gradually layer each voice on top of the other. No wonder his playing is so sublime, detailed and engaging!
Reading for November: Johann Sebastian Bach: His Life, Art, and Work (1802) by Johann Nikolaus Forkel
This was the first published biography of the great J.S. Bach. A really interesting reading where Forkel interviewed those closest with Bach, capturing first-hand accounts of Bach's playing, personality, etc.
