Week 1: Materials and Processes
- Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced reading materials
- Reading notes (step-wise, triad outline, intervals, ledger lines)
- Fretting notes (positions and fingerings and references). Visualization
- Rhythms: Put into groups and verbalize (use words).
Tasks:
- Study the music, identifying step-wise motion, triad leaps and repetition of material
- Write in the fingerings and positions that you are playing in at all times
- Identify any rhythmic patterns that recur throughout the piece/s. Practice them on a scale.
Week 2: Preparation before reading
- Form and expectation (keys and notes)
- Music’s building blocks
- Scale/Range (identify key/s)
- Intervals
- Primary Chords and chunking
Tasks:
- Identify the form of the piece/s
- Identify scales and chords (building blocks) that occur in the piece/s
- Identify any 3rds, 6ths, 8vs or 10ths
- Practice the scales and primary chords of the key/s your piece/s is in
Week 3: Learn the entire fretboard
- Exercises in positions
- Reading the same passage in different positions (use charts to help)
- Practice playing the entire fretboard in different ways - solfege, letters (horizontal and vertical)
- Moveable building blocks (move shapes from pieces)
Tasks:
- Record yourself playing one of the position studies
- Write out a passage in two different positions
- Record yourself playing through the entire fretboard
- Record yourself playing the moveable building blocks (triads, intervals or V-I)
Week 4: Musicianship
- Sing the melody and intervals above bass
- Play rhythm on open string
- Carulli’s method
- Sing one part and play another (or chord progression)
Tasks:
- Record yourself singing/humming a melody
- Record yourself playing the rhythm on an open string
- Choose one exercise from Carulli’s method book to record
- Study the chord progression of your piece and play those chords in basic form. Sing the melody over the top.
