Summary:
• A modulation is when the music changes from one key to another
• The primary reason for modulations is to create emotional contrasts
• There are 24 keys in total, often represented as a circle (the Circle of 5ths)
• Closely related keys: keys that are close by on the circle (very common to modulate to)
• Distantly or remotely related keys: keys that are far apart on the circle (not common to modulate to)
• Tonicization: a temporary and fleeting modulation that usually returns back t the original key
• Modulation: an extended key change that often doesn't return to the original key
• The gateway to a new key: use the dominant chord of the key you are moving to
• Keys and affect:when a piece changes key it changes emotion

Action Points:
1. Record the exercises in modulation (pgs 9-10). Choose 1 key and identify the chords as you play them.
2. Study the pieces you're playing from the perspective of modulations. Do you find key changes? If so, what emotional effect do they have on the pieces and how can you bring it vividly to life?
