4. Classical: The Symphonic Influence
Summary:
• A look at Sor's Minuet op. 22
• Guitarists of Sor's time were immersed in orchestral genres (symphonies, operas, concertos, etc.)
The Symphony:
• A multi-movement work for orchestra
• Generally had this formal outline, with the Minuet included as the 3rd movement
1. Allegro (Sonata Form: exposition, development, recapitulation)
2. Adagio
3. Minuet and Trio
4. Scherzo (Rondo: ABACA)
The Minuet and Trio
• An elegant and graceful dance in triple time
• The Trio was traditionally played by three instruments, hence the name
Orchestral Guitar Playing
• 18th-19th century guitarists constantly used effects to emulate an orchestra
• There were 5 plucking regions
• They could change plucking regions one measure at a time
• Plucking regions and dynamics go hand-in-hand
- Louder = towards the bridge
- Softer = towards the fretboard
